Levi’s Vintage Clothing often draws on musical subcultures for its seasonal fare, ranging from Kentucky punk to reggae roots. Spring/Summer 2021 draws inspiration from the British Madchester scene, particularly Happy Mondays and the indie-dance culture that surrounded them, achieving the trippy theme through bold colors and loose silhouettes.
Madchester presents a particularly interesting period for clothing designers, where The Stone Roses, New Order and the aforementioned Happy Mondays reigned supreme. A mix of rock band instrumentation and bouncy dance structure inspired the music of the era and its followers dressed appropriately in oversized, baggy clothing that was roomy and affordable.
LVC took that notion and expanded it with premium outerwear – including rainbow-patterned parkas, bright smocks and color-block varsity jackets – and plenty of graphic tees. printed with artwork mostly from Central Station, the outfit that did creative work for Happy Mondays and designed their album covers. Other sweaters and t-shirts sport oversized striped designs, split hems, or even a stand-up collar for proper retro style. Likewise, the denim jeans are cut loose and long for an authentic Madchester look, allowing the wearer to easily bundle their wide orange tabs on their adidas trainers.
