A vintage clothing store celebrates its grand opening with a groundbreaking ceremony

MORGANTOWN, West Virginia – Modern Throwback, a vintage clothing company, marked its grand opening on Friday, September 17 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The ceremony took place in Main Street Morgantown and left the owner, Chayton Luevano, in a sense of disbelief.

“Honestly, it’s so surreal, just the fact that people, you know, take time out of their day to love, to come and shop,” Luevano said. It’s a pretty cool experience for me. Because, like I said, I’ve been online, so you know, the customer-owner interface is never something that I’ve experienced. So yeah, that’s great. It’s a dream come true.

Luevano said he launched his online business in 2016. He always dreamed of expanding it, but first he needed to graduate from college.

While in college, Luevano said his online business helped pay for a lot of the costs at the time.

“I paid, not necessarily through the school, but I paid for my groceries and all that,” he said. “And it was doing pretty well online.”

After graduating in Supply Chain Management from West Virginia University in the spring of 2021, he took the next step and opened up his physical space. Luevano said he looked around Morgantown and saw that there were no stores selling vintage clothing, so he decided to open one.

“I thought it would be a good idea to open one,” he said.

Now it’s been open for a month and it sells the same type of vintage clothing in person as it does online.

“We sell vintage clothing of all kinds: WVU t-shirts, hats, jeans, sweatshirts, anything you can really think of; 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s,” Luevano said.

Everything he sells is “real vintage goods” and not reproductions, Luevano said.

And for the moment, he is the only employee of the staff, so it’s “a one man show”. But, so far, business has gone well. Luevano said the hope is to keep growing and to keep finding ways to reach new customers. Its message to people unfamiliar with Modern Throwback is simple.

“If you want to get some really cool clothes that are one of a kind, that few other people have, at a decent and affordable price, then stop by,” Luevano said.

The owner of Modern Throwback said he was happy with how things were going so far and was grateful to everyone who helped him start his business and, also, to those who are stopped at the store.

“Thank you to everyone who came to shop during the month I was open,” Luevano said. “And I hope it will continue like this.”

You can follow Modern Throwback on Instagram, or visit the store, which is located at 360 main street. Opening hours are from 1pm to 7pm every day, except on Saturdays when the store is closed.
